Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation works closely with Susquehanna Co. Career & Technology Center to raise awareness of Marcellus Shale and energy careers.
The Susquehanna County Career & Technology Center is located in Susquehanna County, the heart of the Marcellus Shale’s most prolific production. As Executive Director of the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center, I have been fortunate to partner with Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation in an effort to raise community awareness of the Marcellus Shale.
Since the Marcellus Shale development started, Cabot (along with other industry operators) has fostered strong community relationships. In addition to numerous, generous financial donations, they actually donated their most lucrative resource to this Career and Technology Center: TIME.
Over the last few years, representatives of Cabot have served on my Director’s Advisory Board as well as the SCCTC’s Occupational Advisory Board. They also annually participate in our Graduation and Award’s Ceremonies, Energy Career Day and National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) competitions. In 2011 the SCCTC hosted the “Susquehanna County Workforce Development EXPO”, which was designed to educate the community about the benefits associated with the development of the Marcellus Shale.
With their cutting edge approach to building these positive community relationships, they have paved the way for the others to enjoy these same alliances.
I had the privilege recently to appear before a Senate Briefing Committee in Washington D.C to discuss Career and Technical Education. I shared with our U.S. Senate the important role the natural gas industry, especially Cabot, plays in educating our students and making it possible for them to receive a family sustaining wage.
- Annual funding through the Community Foundation of the Endless Mountains of our student’s tools, uniforms and testing fees regardless of the intended area of study. In total, our students have received more than a quarter of a million dollars in support through this collaborative effort. They have been a champion for networking and supporting the Susquehanna County Career and Technology Center in an effort to incorporate natural gas industry training in our curriculum. They have funded equipment for our programs in an effort to be sure that the most current training is available to the students in Susquehanna County. In 2014, Cabot donated five tractor trailer loads of metal pipe to the welding program at the school.
- Bringing The Challenge Program, Inc. to the students of SCCTC. This program encourages students to achieve a common objective: the development of a skilled and motivated future workforce. Each year $2,000 in cash awards are awarded to the deserving students.
- Sponsoring my trip to Energy Day in Texas. The information and networking acquired at the Energy Day will be invaluable to me as I move forward with implementing energy awareness to our students and the community. We also recently collaborated on a presentation highlighting out partnership at our Pennsylvania Association of Career and Technology Administrators, “Educational and Workforce Development Symposium.”
- Sponsorship of The Pennsylvania Career and Technology Education Conference. The networking at this conference is invaluable to the educational success of our programs at the Career and Technology Center. Not only are they the largest financial supporter of this conference, but once again they take the time to attend the conference. This state-wide collaboration has been extremely beneficial in educating the entire state about the benefits of natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania.
I look forward to many more years of providing the best career and technical education available and that would not be possible without the generosity of Cabot and the entire industry as they work towards training future generations. Their commitment to this community and the Career and Technology Center is second to none. In addition to meeting the energy needs of our nation, through their generosity and vision, they are fueling the education of our workforce.
